Coming off of a month of Artfight, I slowed down a bit and didn’t get as many finished drawings done. But I did spend some time working on a design for a new character, and tried out a bit of animation.
Drawing of Niessus
With some of the motivation I still had after Artfight, I decided to work towards prep for next year! I wanted a nice headshot icon for my character Niessus for his character pages.

I’m happy with how it turned out, I think I captured his general sunshine energy and whimsy.
Animating
I’ve tried my hand at animating for the first time! I knew I should start simple, so first I worked on an animation of a character blinking. Honestly I’m glad I started simple because it also gave me a chance to learn the program and figure out what the heck I was going.
(For some reason WordPress is giving me trouble uploading it, but I’ll keep messing around with it to see if I can get it to work)
I learned some nice tricks along the way that I’ll keep in mind for future projects. I was really happy with how this one turned out for a first attempt! I definitely wanna make ones with a bit more movement to them, but this was a good starting place.
New Character Design: Jae-hyeon
Once again working on a new character design. This time it’s for a fantasy Joseon era Korea Dungeons & Dragons campaign I’ll likely be joining in the future! The main idea I’ve been sticking with so far is a Rogue with the Naraka Prosecutor subclass, from the Undying Corruption module.
Since she’s a Naraka Prosecutor, she’s been tasked with hunting down malicious spirits and returning them to the cycle of reincarnation. I knew she’d have a lawful neutral alignment, since her life revolves around keeping order. I decided to start with outfit designs. At the time I wasn’t sure what I wanted her gender to be. I started out with more masc outfits before going more fem towards the end of the design process.

Mostly I referenced hanboks that would’ve been worn by those in the upper/middle classes, and made some alterations based on military uniforms that would be better suited for combat, like tying down the sleeves around the forearms. I also knew I wanted to make the outfit a little less bright, since she’s a rogue who’s gotta be skulking around some of the time. I did play around with a few brighter colored designs though just to see if I would like them.

This last image shows the designs that I had starred so I could see my favorites all lined up together. I liked using whites and reds in the designs since they’re both colors associated with death / evil spirits, but didn’t want it to be the whole design. I thought they served well as pops of contrasting color instead.
I came up with some final designs for a more masc and fem character, but wasn’t super happy with either. So I worked on keeping the teal color palette I liked, but combining some of the designs.

I learned about a veiled hat called a neoul (너울) worn by women during the Joseon era. I thought it would fit well with her being a rogue and kinda add to the mystery spooky vibes. And I also gave her some eyeglasses! Mostly I just thought they looked cool. As much as it’s kind of a cliche/stereotype to associate eyeglasses with someone more intelligent, but I liked how it looked a lot. Since she’s a rogue her highest stats are Dexterity and Intelligence, so I thought it would be an easy way to show the Intelligence part in her design.

I might end up making some small changes here and there, but overall I’m happy with how the design turned out! I’m really glad I added the veil, I think it looks cool. I’m pretty set on the name Jae-hyeon ( 宰賢 ), but also kinda like the name Ji-hyeon or Ji-hyun (智賢 ), so we’ll see which sticks.

Doodles of Rorik
I also made drew some quick sketches of Rorik for more practice with action poses and creating more fluid, expressive poses.

I ended up referencing the artist Droolingdemon a lot, they’re a storyboard artist whose really good at simple, expressive poses.
I also worked on a new reference for Rorik to keep track of scars throughout the campaign I play him in. I’m not happy with how the side profile of his face turned out, but otherwise it’s alright.

Comic from Pathfinder Session
And last minute this month I just made a quick doodle comic of a moment from my last Pathfinder session I thought was funny
