This month I continued prepping for Artfight, drawing fullbody illustrations of my characters others can use as references!
Artfight Prep: Sylvie

For artfight prep I wanted to draw my character Sylvie again. I felt like looking back her outfit was more de-saturated than I wanted it to be, and I really wanted to push to make the pastel colors brighter and… you know, more pastel-ish.
When I first designed her pretty much everything about her character was outside my comfort zone. She’s still pretty much my only character with bright pastel colors like this. And even her personality wasn’t a character I was used to playing in d&d- she’s an overconfident, loud, flamboyant bard. But I ended up really enjoying the few sessions I got to play her, and over time have liked her design more and more!

Artfight Prep: The Clone
Over the past year I feel like I’ve finally made enough art of him that I feel like I can add this character to my Artfight roster. But I did want at least one solid fullbody drawing of him for people to use as a reference.

Thankfully I had a pretty clear vision going in. I knew for the pose I wanted him to just sort of be dragging the sword along the ground, and have his other arm limp beside him. Looking at it now I think I could’ve pushed it a bit more, had the arm dragging the sword lower down and have him visibly hunched over a bit more. But overall I’m happy with how it turned out! I really like the background I did for it. And I’m not confident drawing armor yet, but I think it turned out pretty alright!
The deeplore on this character is he spawned out of a dnd sesh- the character I was playing at the time was afflicted with a curse that caused random mutations, and one time I rolled on the table and a perfect clone of him sloughed off his body and just ran away. And later on we were going to do a one-shot suicide-squad style session and the dm said alright make your characters, who do you wanna play, and I went can. Can I play that weird mutation clone that ran away. I wanna know whats up with that guy. Whats his deal.

Artfight Prep: Killian
Even more prep for Artfight, I wanted to have a newer fullbody drawing of my character Killian. This time I wanted to try out something a bit different and continue with my no-shading fullbody drawings I had been going with for people to use as references and color-pick from, but I wanted to add smaller details to the design. I got inspired to try this after seeing the artist Snejkha’s work (here’s a link to their Tumblr). They keep to a more cartoony style but still manage to add in a ton of small details with their outfit designs. I thought it looked really nice, so I wanted to give it a try and push myself to add more detail to the outfit design for Killian!
I ended up making two versions, one with him younger and one with him older, since I usually switch between the two designs when drawing him.

I had mixed feelings throughout the drawing. At first when I finished the sketch and lineart I felt really good about it- then I went on to coloring and didn’t like it as much. I think in the end part of it may be there’s some general anatomy issues, and some of it is just drawing in a way that’s outside my comfort zone. In the end I wrapped back around to being pretty happy with how it turned out!
I do think think the amount of detail looks really appealing, it looks busy but in a way that hopefully isn’t overwhelming. I tried to limit the outfit color palette wherever I could to make everything feel more cohesive. I also like that I can see how this same outfit could be simplified to make it easier to draw which is nice.
As for the outfit itself, before this drawing I did some brief outfit explorations (in the next section of this post), and it helped me get a better idea of the colors and designs I liked best. I knew I wanted to have an asymmetrical design to give the feel that this outfit is a patchwork of different outfit pieces and accessories that have been cobbled together.

Misc Doodles and Drawings
I wanted to draw some outfit ideas for my d&d rogue Killian, I left it messy but I like how they turned out! Mostly I just wanted to have something for Artfight that could give people an idea of how he might dress.

After drawing outfits for Killian I wanted to draw some for my d&d grave domain cleric named Styx too! While their personalities are pretty different I actually feel like they would like somewhat similar styles of clothing which is why I think I wanted to make some for Styx after working on Killian. Though I do think Killian leans more towards favoring practicality and style, having a lot of pouches and bits of armor since he’s a thief, while Styx leans more into favoring style and comfort, since they’re a healing-focused spellcaster and aren’t quite as worried about sneaking around or being on the frontlines of a fight.

I redrew my character Morrigan’s ‘true form’ since I hadn’t drawn it I think in probably two or three years? So it was time for a redraw!

Unrelated to anything Artfight but I got wrapped up in The Amazing Digital Circus again with Episode 5 dropping and started thinking about an oc. Not really planning on doing anything with it but I liked the design I came up with. I pictured him joining the group last, even after the character Pomni. He’d be super focused on escaping, sort of to his own detriment. I designed him generally just as a stuffed toy animal and based him loosely off a maine coon cat. For the colors I tried to color pick from colors already used on other characters outfits to help it feel more cohesive. (Also just disclaimer the 2d art on the right hand side of the main cast isn’t my art, I just pulled from the Digital Circus fandom wiki.)
