Character Lineups
At the beginning of the month I continued the work I did with my character lineup, I took the one I did to study shape language and then blocked out the silhouettes that each made. From there I went back and forth making changes to the sketched out lineup and the silhouettes until I liked the look of both. I think this helped a lot to get a better idea of what wasn’t working for some of the characters.
I’ve struggled the most with the character’s outfit at the end of the lineup, and I eventually just realized- why don’t I just give him a big cloak? It creates that more blocky square shape I was going for anyway. So I’m gonna see how I like the look of it the more I work with it, but I’m liking the look a lot more already.
A couple other edits:
- For the first character I changed the shape of the coat, vest, and pants
- For the second character I changed the shape of the hat a bit and made the coat flare out a bit more with a curve rather than straight lines
- For the fifth character I changed the shape of the ruffle at the back of the dress
Below I’ve added the character lineups and silhouette lineups, the ones I started with first are on the left and the end result after the edits is on the right.
After finalizing the sketches and silhouettes I worked on the lineart and flat colors for each of the characters. There’s still a couple parts here and there I want to work on more, but overall I’m really happy with how it’s turned out so far!
Short Comic Page
I was listening to the song “Blood of Angels” by Brown Bird and it inspired me to make a quick comic page based on some of the lyrics for one of my characters, Jedediah Crane, whose a vampire (I have some more drawings of him later on). It was fun working with a limited color palette and seeing how much I could simplify things while still conveying the general tone.
Arcane Fanart
I watched Season 2 of Arcane and have already had a ton of ideas for drawings, but decided first one I wanted to do was just based on one of the flashback scenes with Silco.
I don’t really have a good reason other than I just liked the outfit and lighting, I’m really happy with how it turned out.
Random drawings of my characters David and Jedediah
I did a couple drawings this month of two of my characters, David Drakos and Jedediah Crane, who I play in a text rp group.
For the same two characters I made some quick outfit lineups based on outfits I saw on pinterest. I tried working with a more cartoony style so I could focus more on the clothing than the exact posing or anatomy for the character
For the one below I’d had trouble getting the color rights, for some reason when I exported the drawing it kept changing the saturation, so getting the skin tones to look right in particular was a struggle. At first I wasn’t as big of a fan of this one, but I think I like it more now that I’m not getting frustrated with the colors anymore. This one was based on an AU idea brought up in the text RP group I’m in.
Moodboards for Characters
Making moodboards for characters came up in a text rp group I’m in and I decided to be self indulgent and have some fun making some for the two characters above. It was just a fun little thing and I’m glad I made them!
New Character Idea: Oliver
I started on the design for a new character and did a quick drawing of him I was happy with, and then an outfit lineup with a lineless art style. I thought of the name Oliver Wright for him can’t tell if I’ve accidentally taken that from an author or something since it sounds vaguely familiar.
For the outfit lineup I couldn’t decide which background I like better, so I just included both. It was more difficult than I thought to find information on victorian era clothing for men, but I tried generally sticking with the articles of clothing they used and some of the colors I was seeing, particularly the brighter color outfits. Definitely wouldn’t say this is historically accurate, but I tried to at least reference actual outfits from the era where I could.
I also made a moodboard for him too just for fun.
New Character Idea: Locke
I came up with another new character idea, a siren/harpy based on a kestrel (Falco tinnunculus). I’m thinking Locke for the name but not fully sold on the name or the design yet, so I may play around with it some more.
Starting my New Sketchbook
I started on my next sketchbook once it arrived, and so far I’ve filled in the beginning thirteen pages of it. We’ll see if I can keep up the pace!
So far it’s mostly been filled with drawings of clothing while I figure out how to simplify them, some doodles of original characters, and some drawings I made alongside watching the second season of Arcane.
